Sick

Kevin left to go on a project for the Seabee's Sunday the 24th of Feb. Saturday night one of his best friend's son died. He was a very young man, very. Monday I found out I had diabetes. Had terrible headaches from either the Metformin that I am taking now or because I was coming down with a cold/flu -- I'm still coughing and hacking, with headaches.

Thursday I have a sleep study.. then next Thursday also. I have to get a new Cpap machine but I have to have a new sleep study first. The old machine and sleep study is over five years old, so they make you have a new one.

So yea. Diabetes-- I am cutting down on my sugar and carbs.. Trying really hard, but it is not easy. At the moment I really don't know what I can eat like for snacks. My blood sugar has come down about 40 points already but I still have 100 to go.

Kevin is home now. Yesterday on my birthday. I went to go get him in Waco and went to some nurseries to get tomato plants. I got some of the ones I want, but no eggplant.
We went by the bbq place and got stuff for the family.
yea so Im done

ok, for diabetes.....you can add in veggies, LOTS of veggies and fruits, though be careful what fruits you add as some are not that great for those of us with wonky blood sugar. Ready for this one?? Lean Cuisine meals (I do the mushroom-spinach pizza, steak/cheddar sandwiches, chicken garlic pizza, turkey with cornbread stuffing and glazed apples) are good, however, I've learned that they don't have enough veggies for me, so I add in a Green Giant simply steamed box.....usually the green beans with almonds or the baby vegetables.

Now, sometimes I take a small package of penne pasta and mix it with the steamed baby veggies and that is also a filling meal.

However, to REALLY get your blood sugar down, you also have to get exercising - cardio AND weights!!! I'm sure that you are probably telling me to shut up by now, but I speak from experience. Since finding out that my blood sugar was in the pre-diabetes range (something that freaked me out considering my family history)I've been trying to take care of things without medication. Just by dropping 7 pounds (walking 2 or 3 times a week for an hour, shooting for the 10,000 steps), I was able to get it into the normal range.

Right now, I'm holding at a 9 pound weight loss, which is great, but I need to drop another 15 pounds before my nutritionist is happy with me. Yes, I actually went to a diabetes nutritionist after hearing about my blood sugar - current doc was the one that told me, but the bloodwork was done with my previous doc....not something that made me like her very much. If you are able to get to a diabetes nutritionist, do so. The one I saw gave me a lovely folder filled with great information such as things we can eat, and how to properly divide your plate with food - protein-starch-veggies...great visual for me since I tend to gorge on some foods and ignore others.

If you can, get out and walk at least 10 minutes a day, starting at a comfortable pace. Build it up gradually, and then pick up speed. You should be able to get to at least an hour and at a quick walk within a few weeks. Just keep going and you will see weight beginning to disappear and your blood sugar will start dropping.

Oh, and make sure to eat something for breakfast - it stimulates your metabolism and also helps you lose weight. I like a combination of low-fat yoplait yogurt with lowfat cottage cheese....looks disgusting but is filling and quick.

If you have any questions, I can get out my folder and give you some specifics.

I didn't remember that you were diabetic. I went to the dietitian and she told me all of that. I'd done a lot of research. It's basically re learning all my bad years of doing stuff the wrong way. It's like telling your kids do as I say not do as I do. Well now I have to do as I say too.

I am surprised at how much starches I can eat though. I have come down from 277 to 170 this morning. It's eating so late. That's the hardest. Not to eat late because I don't go to bed until after 12 or 1 am. Last night it was 3.

Exercise. Yea Doc says 30 min a day. So far it hasn't happened. I've lost 20 lbs so far.

Anyway..Thanks for the info.
See ya's :P

WooHoo!! 20 pounds is outstanding!! I weighed in last night and I've lost a total of 6 pounds..grrrr. So, now that I've cleaned out around the weights and treadmill, I have no excuse NOT to get moving. I only have a month before I meet up with my nutritionist, and I'd really like to be at the goal she set for me...another 10 pounds to drop...in a month....hmmmm.

I'm not officially diabetic at this point. They call me "pre-diabetic", but since there is such a STRONG family history, I want to get a jump on it now. Also, just the thought of the clicking sound that the lancets make for when you have to test your blood sugar....that sound sends chills down my spine. Granted, I stick my fingers all the time when I'm sewing and it doesn't phase me at all, but....lol.

So, I figure that if I can get the blood sugar under control by changing my diet and losing weight, it's a good thing and I won't stress out over having to stab myself multiple times during the day.

Congrats on the weight loss, I'm really impressed!!
